In order to achieve our mission to rid the world's oceans of plastic, we need to perform dynamic analyses and fully understand our system's motions. The hydro engineer will have succeeded when the analyses are correct and our systems are ready to be built.

The assignment

Support front-end engineering and design for ocean cleanup systems, performing hydrodynamic calculations and simulations and communicating the results to the project team


  • Fully understand the ocean cleanup system’s motions and driving forces; using thorough knowledge of first-principle hydrodynamics
  • Together with project engineers, develop ocean cleanup system concepts, determine feasibility and perform concept selection
  • Build numerical models of concepts, perform reality checks, compare outcomes of different concepts
  • Perform dynamic analyses of ocean cleanup systems with Orcaflex, hand calculations and other tools and document results
  • Perform basic scale model tests
  • Determine laboratory model test requirements and support execution of tests in specialist facilities
  • Perform post-processing of laboratory and full-scale tests


  • Master or Bachelor degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent, with hydrodynamics as specialism preferred but not required.
  • 2-4 years of relevant engineering experience, preferably in the offshore or maritime industry
  • Experience with OrcaFlex or similar is essential
  • Experience with conceptual design and basic engineering
  • Balancing hydrodynamics engineering, conceptual thinking and teamworking
  • Experience with design and analysis of (offshore) floating structures is preferred
  • Knowledge and experience with programming languages such as python and MATLAB is beneficial
  • Fluent in English
